The incorporation of a SAFETY EDGE on this project has had the cooperation and support of many people and organizations.  A committee to study application of the SAFETY EDGE statewide was formed through InTrans (Tom McDonald, Bob Sperry, et. al.) last year.  This group involved people from FHWA, Iowa DOT, cities, counties, consultants, contractors, equipment manufacturers, etc.  Our project was identified as a candidate project to incorporate the SAFETY EDGE.  This is a joint project with Linn County and both counties immediately recognized the safety potential of this concept.  Jerry Roche from FHWA was instrumental in supporting incorporation of the SAFETY EDGE in our project and obtaining funding for it.  Our project is an ARRA funded project and was already under contract with a letting date of August 18, 2009.  Another critical key player was our prime contractor, Horsfield Construction, Inc. of Epworth.  They enthusiastically supported this idea and pursued fabrication of equipment modifications to accomplish this.  We very much appreciate all the support from everyone to make this happen.  We think the end result will be a much safer road for all.
