Vital Statistics - Births, Deaths, and Marriages
Beginning July 1, 1997, certified copies of birth, death, and marriage certificates became available through the Recorder's Office, if the event occurred in Jones County. Each certified copy is $15.00. Those requesting certified copies must prove entitlement (immediate family) before acquiring copy.
When requesting a certified vital record by mail, all completed applications must be notarized and a photo copy of the applicant's valid driver's license, or other government issued picture ID is required. We also request a postal money order (or bank certified check) made payable to the Jones County Recorder and a self-addressed, stamped business size envelope. All certified copies are $15 each. Uncertified copies are available at $5.00 each. Requests for uncertified copies must be obtained in person. Those out-of-county or state persons wishing to secure genealogical information will be referred to the local genealogical association. County residents are asked to conduct their searches from 8:30 to 4:00 pm.
Records from 1921 to 1941 are kept on the state level as are single parent births prior to 1995, adoption records and legal name changes. You may download the application, and mail it to the address in Des Moines, Iowa. To order a vital record via phone through the Department of Public Heath, call 515-281-4944. There is a $9.00 surcharge to use your credit card.
